It’s a question all Marvel fans have surely asked more than once…
After departing from a blockbuster with so many things at play as Avengers: Endgame, your mind can’t help but contemplate wild alternatives.
In the MCU there are always so many ways an event can play out and Phase Three perfectly illustrates that Marvel Studios is capable of delivering a shock. If you were there, stunned and cowering on the opening night of Infinity War, you’ll be all too aware of that.
When audiences discovered that an animated series exploring alternate timelines in the multiverse was set to arrive on Disney+, excitement was high.
Now, we’re deep into the batch of episodes and the fifth sees us spend some quality time with a voice some may find familiar – and that’s not all. So, who is Kurt in What If?
Who is Kurt in What If?
Viewers who have seen the 2015 MCU effort Ant-Man and its sequel – Ant-Man and the Wasp – may recognise Kurt, as he appears in both of those too.
He is portrayed by David Dastmalchian and is established as a friend of Scott Lang’s.
In What If he appears alongside Hope van Dyne in an effort to help save the world from the perils of the zombie apocalypse. He is reunited with Scott after he’s cured.
To understand the importance of the moment, it’s worth reflecting on his role in the MCU prior.
When we meet Kurt in Ant-Man he’s part of a criminal gang that brings Scott in to help orchestrate a plan to steal from Hank Pym. He is an acquaintance of Luis, one of Scott’s friends that he stays with after getting out of jail.
Against his better judgment and facing down unemployment, Scott reluctantly gets involved with Kurt’s criminal endeavors. He’s a master computer hacker, even pulling off the feat of piercing Pym Technologies’ headquarters.
His inclusion in the 2021 series really gives audiences and MCU fans the chance to get more of a feel for the character, with the “resident weirdo” showing up in the “How to Survive During an Apocalypse” and being presented as an important player in the apocalypse beyond that.
“Kurt stole the entire episode”
The series has done well to win over Disney+ subscribers so far and Kurt’s arrival in this wild alternative timeline has been championed as something of a fan-favourite moment.
Plenty of viewers have flocked to Twitter to offer their praise. Check out a selection of tweets:
The rise of David Dastmalchian
The 46-year-old American actor is no stranger to starring in comic-book adaptations and properties.
More recently he earned fans portraying Polka-Dot Man in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, but long before then, he played one of the Joker’s thugs in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. That was actually his first movie role too.
As we’ve already mentioned, he was in both Ant-Man films too, but it doesn’t stop there.
The Flash fans were recently treated to his take on Abra Kadabra in the Arrowverse series, while he also played Dwight Pollard in Gotham.
It’s not all superhero stuff though, as film fans may have also seen him in the likes of Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (Nervous Cop), A Million Little Pieces (Roy), Prisoners (Bob Taylor), Blade Runner 2049 (Coco), The Belko Experiment (Lonny Crane) and more.
Then there’s TV to consider too, as he’s been in MacGyver (Murdoc), From Now (Boris Chernov), Reprisal (Johnson), and Twin Peaks (Pit Boss Warrick).
We can also look forward to his part in Denis Villeneuve’s forthcoming blockbuster Dune (Piter De Vries).
What If? Is now streaming on Disney+.
