Andros Townsend has slammed the doubters who questioned Everton’s decision to sign Demarai Gray.
The 30-year-old claimed that Gray and Everton boss Rafa Benitez are a ‘match made in heaven’, as he told talkSPORT.
Gray moved to Everton this summer, alongside Townsend, for a tad under £2 million after a short spell at Bayer Leverkusen.
He had started his career at Birmingham, before joining Leicester just before they won the Premier League title, but he wasn’t able to progress his game in the years after.
Whilst Townsend has been working with Gray for a small period of time at Goodison Park, he was full of praise for his fellow winger and how he is one of the bargains of the season.
“I don’t know why but when we signed him,” said Townsend. “Everton got a lot of stick saying ‘why are they signing Demarai Gray?’
“This is a player, I remember coming him through being the next best thing at Leicester. He’s sharp and direct.
“He perhaps lost his way a little bit, for one reason or another, but he is still the same Demarai Gray that burst through at Leicester.
“With a manager like Rafa, like I said before, he leaves no stones unturned. He wants to improve every player. It’s a match made in heaven and you have started to see that with his form. And he is probably one of the bargains of the season.”
Both Townsend and Gray might just prove to be the bargains of the summer, especially if they continue their current form.
There was a lot of heat on Benitez heading into the new season, for obvious reasons, but the players at his disposal are fighting for the badge.
Of course, only three Premier League games have been played, and it needs to be remembered that the Toffees started stronger under Carlo Ancelotti last term.
But one thing is for sure, Gray and Townsend have provided some much-needed directness, fearless nature and speed out on the flanks.
