Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter after listening to Andros Townsend speak about Roy Hodgson, following Everton’s 3-1 win over Burnley.

What’s the story?

Well, after scoring a Goal of the Season contender against the Clarets, Townsend spoke about the differences between Rafa Benitez and Hodgson.

Sky Sports quote him as saying: “During the last five years at Crystal Palace, Roy Hodgson worked tirelessly with me to make me more dependable in a defensive sense, but now I’ve come here Rafa Benitez isn’t concerned about what I do defensively. He wants me to be clinical in the final third with goals and assists.”

Clearly, Townsend doesn’t feel he was afforded much license to attack the opposition under the 74-year-old.

Last season, the 30-year-old scored just one goal in 34 Premier League outings under Hodgson.

Under Benitez this season, he already has one goal and two assists in four appearances.

Hodgson was absolutely holding the attacking players back at Crystal Palace, something Wilfried Zaha also suggested at the weekend.

Comfortable on both feet, plenty of stamina and a ferocious long shot, the Crystal Palace fans didn’t get to see the best of Townsend because of Hodgson.

In truth, the style of play under the ex-England manager was dreadful.

As aforesaid, Zaha also seemed to aim a dig at Hodgson’s football when praising what Patrick Vieira has brought to SE25.

Crystal Palace’s official website quote the Ivorian as saying: “The way we’re playing, we’re bound to get a chance. I feel like it’s not just counter-attacks and hoofing the ball around, when it’s properly planned the way we’re playing the goals are going to come eventually.”

The Selhurst Park faithful are certainly happy Hodgson is gone, and it seems some players are glad to have escaped the shackles of his football.

In all honesty, these comments aren’t a surprise. No attacking player in Europe would’ve wanted to play in such a defensive set-up.

Let’s see what the Crystal Palace fans on Twitter have been saying about Townsend’s comments…
