Michael Dawson has suggested on Sky Sports News (1:15pm, September 11, 2021) that Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has surprised him since his move from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The former Tottenham Hotspur central defender has said that he did not think that Jota was going to get much playing time when he signed for Liverpool from Wolves last summer.
The Sky Sports pundit has said that the 24-year-old Portugal international forward has surprised him.
Dawson said on Sky Sports News (1:15pm, September 11, 2021): “When they signed Jota for £40 million, I thought, ‘It’s a lot of money. He is not going to play’. And he has been sensational for them.”
Important player for Liverpool
Liverpool paid £41 million to Premier League rivals Wolves for Jota last summer, as reported by BBC Sport at the time.
The 24-year-old had injury problems last season, but when fit and played by manager Jurgen Klopp, the Portuguese was truly superb.
Jota scored nine goals in 12 Premier League starts, and scored four goals and provided one assist in six Champions League starts for the Reds last season.
The attacker is now starting games for Liverpool due to injury to Roberto Firmino.
Jota is doing well too, and it will be interesting to see if Firmino is able to get back into the team when he becomes available.
Firmino has not had the best of times for a while now, and there is an argument to be made that Liverpool manager Klopp needs to start playing Jota instead of the Brazil international on a regular basis.
