Jeff Stelling has claimed that he ‘almost crashed the car’ when he heard the question of whether ’Tottenham are title contenders’ this season, as he told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (11/09/21 at 12:25 pm).
Former Tottenham man Michael Dawson responded to the Sky presenter’s comments and shared that ‘unfortunately’ they aren’t contenders, but in the race to finish in the top-four.
After four Premier League games, Spurs have picked up nine points, suffering one defeat, which occurred on Saturday away at Crystal Palace.
During the build-up to that all-London affair, Stelling was reacting to what he was hearing about Spurs.
“As far as Spurs are concerned, I read a radio piece this week and the headline of it was ‘Are Spurs title contenders?’” said Stelling.
“I almost crashed the car. Are Spurs title contenders?”
“Unfortunately not,” said Dawson. “That’s been realistic. At the start of the season, there was a lot of negativity around the club.
“But as soon as Nuno has come in, they beat Man City on the opening day, that place was electric – their aim, I said it from the start, is to be trying to challenge for the top four.”
If Nuno can manage to secure a Champions League finish for Spurs then it would be some debut campaign for the ex-Wolves man.
But getting back into the Europa League would be a minimum given that they are competing in the Europa Conference League currently.
If that isn’t achieved then it will be interesting to see how Spurs fans and Daniel Levy react.
After all, the man he replaced, Jose Mourinho, was sacked for a lot less.
And despite that 3-0 defeat to Palace yesterday, three wins from four, with three clean sheets and Harry Kane not firing yet is an outstanding start from the new man in Tottenham’s dugout.
