Clinton Morrison has stated that he can now see Raphinha being deployed as a ‘number 10’ following the arrival of Dan James at Leeds United, as he told Sky Sports (11/09/21 at 1:20 pm).
The Sky pundit thinks Leeds’ explosive winger, who is deployed out on the right by Marcelo Bielsa, has the ability to ‘play anywhere’.
With Jack Harrison cementing his place on the left, Raphinha putting opposition defenders on their backsides from his position, then the question remains where James will fit in if Bielsa opts to start all three.
Bielsa has that option later on Sunday afternoon when his Leeds side welcomes Liverpool to Elland Road.
But Morrison thinks with James in the building, he can now see Raphinha being deployed in a different role.
“I think he could play Raphinha in the ten,” said Morrison. “Play James on the right, Harrison on the left and Bamford through the middle.
“Then Raphinha, he can play anywhere and there will be times where they have to rotate.
“But that front four, Merson just said that James is a perfect signing for Leeds, with the way they want to break, they can cause teams a lot of problems.”
Leeds fans will be relieved that Raphinha is able to play against Liverpool today after the threat of Brazilian players being banned for this week’s Premier League fixtures.
Bielsa’s side are looking for their first win of the new season, and if they are to get those first three points of the campaign, then they need Raphinha at his dazzling best.
He showcased that before the international break when he put ex-Leeds man, Charlie Taylor, on his backside during his side’s 1-1 draw at Burnley.
It was Raphinha’s dazzling and darting run inside the penalty area that allowed Patrick Bamford to open his account for the new season.
