Tensai Okamura made a Japanese anime TV series named DARKER THAN BLACK which was animated by Bones. This series was produced by Bones and Aniplex.

At the time 2, seasons are released. The first season which featured a total of 25 episodes premiered on April 6, 2007, and ended on September 28, 2007.

After 2 years, the second season streamed on October 9, 2009, and ended on December 25, 2009. The second season contains a total of 12 episodes and 4 OVA(Original Video Animation).

Music for the series was created by Yoko Kanno which contains a total of 20 tracks including the first opening and ending themes.

In North America, Funimation Global Group licensed this anime. In January 2016, it was announced that Funimation loses the license for the first season.

The Plot of Darker than black

10 years ago, in South America a strange spatial anomaly is identified as “Heaven’s Gate” seemed, shortly followed by the opening of “Hell’s Gate” in Tokyo altering the sky and wreaking destruction on the landscape. The real stars vanished and got replaced by false stars. During this time, people possessing different extraordinary skills were named “Contractors”—rose, each capable of different divine actions.

Each Contractor has a corresponding fake star, their work reacted to their actions. Such Contractors were usually distinguished by their star’s Messier catalogue number. Contractors gain their incredible abilities at the cost of their humanity;

Whenever they use their powers they have to “pay the price” because of this instinctive compulsion they named Contractors, which can range from eating particular foods or completing meaningless tasks, to self-harm or transforming their bodies in unique ways. Due to the disastrous Heaven’s War, the United States was forced to lose its dominant position as a superpower to a mysterious organization named the Syndicate.

Mainly the story revolves around a Chinese bassed contractor codenamed “Hei” because he undertakes various undercover operations and slaughter missions in Tokyo under the direction of the above-mentioned Syndicate. It finally reveals a plan of the Syndicate to eradicate the existence of contractors, and resistance put up by contractors from the Syndicate itself and various surveillance agencies.

Is there enough source material for Darker Than Black season 3

Well, there is a scope for season 3, in that they could either tell about the prequel to the first season or a future where they hunt down the boy they presented in the final of darker than black season 2.

Following were the main characters of season 2.

  • Hei was voiced by Hidenobu in Japanese and Jason Liebrecht in English,
  • Yin was voiced by Misato Fukuen in Japanese and Brina Palencia in English,
  • Huang was voiced by Masuru Ikeda in Japanese and John Swasey in English,
  • Mao was voiced by Ikuya Sawaki in Japanese and Kent Williams in English.
  • We can get them back in season 3.

The showrunners have not yet declared the cast of season 3.
