Meet Karena Evans, the director of Chloe Bailey’s ‘Have Mercy’

Chloe Bailey dropped her debut single ‘Have Mercy’ on September 10, 2021, accompanied by a stunning video directed by Karena Evans.

Chloe Bailey of duo Chloe X Hailey, released her first single ‘Have Mercy’ and she’s definitely made an impression as a solo artist.

While the catchy RnB song will definitely become an anthem for bootylicious dancing in the club, it’s the music video that’s getting all attention.

The 23-year-old singer and actress rocks several outfits, including a diamante bikini and an extravagant black gown with a feather headpiece wider than the doorframe to behind her.

Set at a college pool party, Chloe trances the male students with her moves and licks marble statues in certain scenes- this couldn’t have happened without the brain of director Karena Evans.

Who is Karena Evans?

The woman behind the mesmerising visuals of ‘Have Mercy’ is 25-year-old director and actress, Karena Evans.

Born on December 17, 1995, Karena hails from Toronto, Canada and her directing career began as an intern for the hugely-successful Director X.

After signing to his company, she directed a video for Sean Paul and a ‘Black Lives Matter’ short for Nike.

She made a name for herself when she became the mastermind of several Drake videos.

Her first job for the rapper was 2018’s ‘God’s Plan’ – the video budget was just shy of $1 million but the crew donated it all to charity. Despite this, the music video went viral and the song topped the Billboard Hot 100; currently, ‘God’s Plan’ has 1.3 billion YouTube views and Karena won Best Director at the 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs.

She has since directed Drake’s ‘Nice For What‘, ‘I’m Upset‘ and ‘In My Feelings‘.

Other creations include SZA’s ‘Garden (Say It Like Dat)‘ and Coldplay’s ‘Everyday Life‘ – needless to say, Karena has an impressive portfolio at such a young age.

Karena Evans, outside of music

Karena’s achievements go beyond music videos: she’s directed episodes of Starz series P-Valley, FX’s Snowfall and the 2021 sequel to Gossip Girl.

As an actress, she starred in Canadian drama film, Firecrackers, and appeared in series Mary Kills People.

Her next directing project will be episode 8 of FX series, Y: The Last Man. The show will premiere on Hulu on September 13th, 2021 and we predict episode 8 will air on October 18th.
