Manchester City captain Fernandinho has said that conversations took place between the club and Jorge Mendes for Cristiano Ronaldo.
Speaking to ESPN Brazil, the midfielder revealed that the Portuguese super-agent was at the club to sort out the contracts for the likes of Ederson Moraes and Ruben Dias. Moreover, Fernandinho claims that conversations between City and Ronaldo took place.
The attacker, who scored 36 goals last season in all competitions for Juventus, was linked with City in the final week of the transfer window. However, Manchester United swooped in at the eleventh hour to re-sign their former icon.
Since returning to Manchester, Ronaldo has looked his usual best. The striker scored a brace on his Premier League comeback, with the attacker also scoring this week in the UEFA Champions League against Young Boys.
Indeed, things could have been if City signed Ronaldo. And according to Fernandinho, conversations likely took place between the two parties. The Brazilian said: “I think there was a chance, yes, good, considerable. I think there were even a few conversations.”
“His agent was here at the club renewing Ederson’s and Ruben Dias’ contracts. As well as seeing the situation of Bernardo Silva and João Cancelo.”
With Ronaldo firing already on his return to England, City missed out on signing one of the best strikers in world football the same summer Sergio Aguero departed for FC Barcelona.
Indeed, it would have been ideal to have Ronaldo leading the line. But with United aggressively swooping in to sign their club legend, City were seemingly out of the race before it even started.
