MOSCOW (AP) — Alexei Navalny, an opposition politician from Russia, has fallen victim to a suspected poisoning attack on Thursday on a flight back to Moscow from Tomsk, Siberia. He’s known to be a fierce critic of President Putin. He’s in a coma after arriving at the hospital. His associates believe that his political rivals orchestrated this attack.
The doctors treating Navalny think that he’s not in the condition to transport to Germany. He is in a hospital at Omsk, which is nearly 2,500 miles away from Berlin, which can take upto five to six hours by flight.
Navalny’s spokesperson Kira Yaramysh tweeted that, “The ban on the transportation of Navalny is only needed to stall for time and wait until the poison in his body can no longer be traced. Moreover, every hour of delay creates a critical threat to his life.”
Alexei Navalny was returning from the Siberian city of Tomsk on Thursday and suddenly started feeling sick. The flight had to make an emergency landing in Omsk and was hospitalized there. His team thinks he must have been poisoned through tea.
Ivan Zhdanov, a close associate of Navalny, has accused officials of hiding reports of poison found in his system. He said that officials found a dangerous substance in Navalny’s body, but they aren’t disclosing the substance’s details. Simultaneously, Russian officials have declined to comment by stating that the forensic investigation is still ongoing.
This is not the first time that Navalny has been under attack; in 2017, some unknown men threw antiseptic on his face that resulted in damage to his eye.
Last year, Navalny was rushed to a hospital from prison, where he was serving a sentence following an administrative arrest, with what his team said was suspected poisoning. Doctors said he had a severe allergic attack and discharged him back to prison the following day. – In 2019, he was hospitalized when he was serving his prison sentence.
Navalny used to run an organization called Foundation for Fighting Corruption. He exposed many scandals and frauds that involved high-level Russian officials and businessmen. However, Yevgeny Prigozhin, a businessman said to have contacts with the Kremlin, filed an expensive lawsuit against the foundation, henceforth closure.
Navalny is considered to be a fierce opposition leader and activist. He tried to run against Putin in 2018, but the Kremlin stopped him from running. Navalny is working hard to topple the Russian ruling party – United Russia by promoting opposition candidates.
