A partnership between Quartz Mountain Nature Park and the Bureau of Reclamation has resulted in two new docks at Lake Altus-Lugert. A new boat dock at the Main boat ramp and a handicap-accessible, covered fishing dock, near Horsehead Point will make lake activities much more accessible for all.
The fishing dock construction was done by Atlantic MEECO. Construction has been underway for several weeks and has completed just in time for the weekend. James Sherrill of Atlantic MEECO stated, “People have been asking how soon they could use the fishing dock. It seems it will be very popular.”
The primary purpose of the fishing dock, is fishing. Diving from, swimming around and mooring to, are all prohibited activities for the fishing dock. As all these activities scare away the fish.. Bird watching, sightseeing and picture taking, if done quietly, are all appropriate activities for the fishing dock. Park naturalist, Sue Hokanson, commented, “The fishing dock will be a great place for bird watching. Great blue herons are often seen fishing all around Horsehead.”
