“TEXAS” a Musical Romance of Panhandle History performed in beautiful Palo Duro Canyon State Park allowed one of our own, Jamie Vaughn, 4th grade student at Edison Elementary the opportunity to be one of the cast members in a performance this past Saturday evening. Jamie was given the opportunity through the Armstrong County Museum and Gem Theater.

A lone horseman carrying the flag of the great state of Texas appears atop a 600 foot cliff, signaling the beginning of the most spectacular outdoor musical drama in the world. With a burst of fireworks and a moving swell of the music, the horseman gallops away. Suddenly, a cast of more than 60 actors, singers and dancers takes the state to kick off the show that millions of fans from all around the world have come to see. Only a state as big as Texas could host a show as big as Texas!

The play is a story that takes place during the late 1880’s when the farmers, ranchers, Indians and the rail road were learning to live together. Jamie played “Moonlite Tatum” a young daughter of a farming family that had many hardships as the drama unfolds. Jamie was on stage about half the time and the parents, Wayne and Shirley Vaughn were very proud of Jamie and her performance. Jamie’s grandparents are James and Martha Johnston from Claude. Texas in Armstrong County and her Aunt Marsha Griswold from Fort Worth were in attendance to watch Jamie’s performance. “TEXAS” is performed each night except Monday night from June 4th and August 21st.

Last February the Mangum Tigers hosted the Merritt Oilers in a regular season basketball game. But this particular game had special meaning for Mangum coach, Jeff Carlisle. For the past few years Mangum has participated in the Coaches Vs. Cancer game to raise funds for cancer research. In December 2008 Coach Carlisle’s mother, Vickie Kenney was diagnosed with cancer. She passed away in November 2009. The Coaches Vs. Cancer game against Merritt was played in her honor. Mangum raised over $3,000 and won 2nd in the state. Bethel School placed first with their effort. Shown with the 2nd place trophy is Coach Carlisle with his two sons Zach and Ryan.
