What a difference a year can make. In spite of the recent stretch of hot temperatures this July, it seems like winter when compared to just one year ago.

Through the first 20 days of 2009 we saw triple digit weather 11 times with the temperature hitting 107 on the 11th. Things weren’t just hot, they were dry as well. Through the first 20 days of July we received just .9” of rain for the month and had received just 9.32” for the entire year.

Fast forward to July 2010 and the average high temperature has been 80 with the lows averaging 68. And we didn’t hit the triple digit mark until the 17th when the gage read 101. We hit 100 on the 18th, with those two being the only days above 100 this month.

The rain totals have been in our favor, receiving 6.92” this month according to Mangum weatherman, Bob Bratton, and for the year it has been extremely wet with a total rain of 15.99” since January 1.

In spite of the opening of the irrigation canal from Lugert, the recent rain has continued to flow into the lake. According to Park Naturist, Sue Hokanson, Lugert was 85% full last week, just 43” below being completely filled.

Well, like they say, in Oklahoma if you don’t like the weather, just wait a few minutes and it will change!

Last February the Mangum Tigers hosted the Merritt Oilers in a regular season basketball game. But this particular game had special meaning for Mangum coach, Jeff Carlisle. For the past few years Mangum has participated in the Coaches Vs. Cancer game to raise funds for cancer research. In December 2008 Coach Carlisle’s mother, Vickie Kenney was diagnosed with cancer. She passed away in November 2009. The Coaches Vs. Cancer game against Merritt was played in her honor. Mangum raised over $3,000 and won 2nd in the state. Bethel School placed first with their effort. Shown with the 2nd place trophy is Coach Carlisle with his two sons Zach and Ryan.
